Teaching Methods

What is the Barton Reading & Spelling System?

The Reading Muse provides reading and spelling assistance using a systematic, multisensory program called the Barton Reading & Spelling System. The Barton Reading & Spelling System was developed by Susan Barton, an expert in the field of dyslexia. The program is based on the renowned Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Method which was developed in the 1930's by Anna Gillingham and Samuel Orton. The Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Method of teaching reading is different from other reading methods in two ways: what is taught and how it is taught.

What is taught:

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Sound/Letter Correspondence
  • The Six Types of Syllables
  • Probabilities and Rules
  • Roots, Prefixes and Suffixes

How it is taught:

  • Simultaneous multisensory instruction
  • Private one-on-one tutoring sessions
  • Students learn at their own pace
  • Explicit instruction with adequate practice
